In many cases, Tohaku and the Museum Theater have organized each exhibitions using the same contents, but there some issues that the customers rarely come and go between the Museum theater and related exhibitions at Tohaku.

For these issues, we designed a service with 4 touch points related to The Great Map of Japan (Inouzu), and offer them to the users. First, the customers get interest in Inouzu via an interactive map viewer in front of the Museum Theater, and understand deep knowledge via a VR movie “Map of Japan created by Ino Tadataka” at Museum Theater. After watching it, the customers realized information about how Ino Tadataka measured via a workshop on pace countings. Finally, the customers move to Special exhibition “Map of Japan created by Ino Tadataka” at Heiseikan Thematic Exhibition Room, and watch the real maps based on their knowledge and experience.

As a result of the evaluation tests, this service changed passive experiences on the Museum Theater to more subjective experiences, and achieved more effective linkage between the Museum Theater and the exhibition.

Service Design, 2013-2015

Karin Iwasaki: UX Design
Minato Takeda: Hardware Engineering
Mina Shibasaki: UX Design
Yoichi Kamiyama: Hardware Engineering
Kouichi Yoshino: Concept, Contents Development
Kouichi Obata: Software Engineering
Shizuko Endo：Project Management
Satoru Tokuhisa: Service Design
Kouta Minamizawa： Project Management

Collaborator

Toppan Printing Company

Press URL

http://www.toppan.co.jp/news/2014/07/newsrelease140711.html

Award

Satoru Tokuhisa, Koichi Yoshino, Koichi Obata, Shizuko Endo, Karin Iwasaki, Mina Shibasaki, Yoichi Kamiya, and Kouta MInamizawa.
A Service Design Practice using Special Exhibition “Map of Japan created by Ino Tadataka” at Tokyo National Museum and Museum Theater.
VRSJ Outstanding Paper Award
15 September, 2016

Journal paper

Satoru Tokuhisa, Koichi Yoshino, Koichi Obata, Shizuko Endo, Karin Iwazaki, Minato Takeda, Mina Shibasaki, Youichi Kamiyama and Kouta Minamizawa.
A Service Design Practice using Special Exhibition “Map of Japan created by Ino Tadataka” at Tokyo National Museum and Museum Theater.
Transactions of the Virtual Reality Society of Japan, Vol.20, No.1, pp. 3-14, March, 2015.

We designed a service on “The Great Map of Japan (Inouzu)” in order to expand the user experience in the museu[…]

[3,7
